this update can be gotten via ninite.com which I think is the easiest way to get it.

If Ninite says Java running locked, be sure to kill the task "iexplore.exe"
If multiple iexplore.exe is running, kill them all.
this will stop Java from running and you'll be able to update this way.

I'm using the File Hippo update checker, which usually notifies me of Java updates. It hasn't this time, though. I was just hearing a couple of days ago how we were supposed to disable Java because of some type of big security holes, but it wasn't elaborated on what those were. What's the story behind all this?

Coolness. I'm not running Java on any systems right now, but this is great info for these that are worried about it.
Thank you.

Your welcome.

From what I've heard, this update doesn't actually fix the gaping security holes that are still present. I'm curious about how a complete uninstall of Java is done. It's not necessarily because I'm paranoid, but because if Java is just bloatware, and unstable bloatware at that, I kind of want to be rid of it.

To uninstall Java, you just go to your Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel (I have Windows XP so not sure how you're get to it using a later OS.) And you remove the files that start with Java TM or Java JRE. There was also another Java file in my PC that turned out to be for programmers of something, but I learned I didn't need it and removed that as well. I thought it might affect some programs on my PC, but it turns out the only places that really say I should install Java are some web pages, but nothing that I regularly use needs Java, so I'm just going to keep it uninstalled. *smile*

the fact that they set the site zone to high wil help.
you can choose mor who accesses the java as I understand it.

I'd just remove it if its bothering you. Its not blote ware it is used by some websites, but its visual, so it will not effect you.

I decided to take the easy way out and uninstalled it.

Yeah baby! Until they get it together, and they will never mind.
